Home-based food businesses follow food safety guidelines that drive up operational costs by as much as 30%, even though they belong to an unlicensed sector. Such businesses mushroomed during the pandemic, but they have been taking some heat over hygiene practices, following the recent suspension of a home-based bakery. The Singapore Food Agency said home-based food businesses are exempted from licensing requirements as the food safety risk is small due to limited production. However, some said tighter regulations will help regain consumer confidence.
