Ranking number one on Google in 2026 is not enough.
I know that sounds wrong.
Hear me out.
Google rankings tell you where you appear when someone types a query into Google.
But a significant and growing percentage of your customers are not typing into Google.
They are asking ChatGPT.They are asking Perplexity.
They are reading Google’s AI-generated answer at the top of the page —
the one that appears before any of the blue links.
And none of those AI answers care about your Google ranking.
AI platforms recommend businesses based on what they have read
across the entire internet — your content depth,
your authority signals, how many trusted sources mention your business.
A business ranked number five on Google with deep educational content and strong citation presence
will appear in AI answers ahead of the number one ranked business every single time.
This is not the future.
This is happening right now.
The question is not whether you rank on Google.
The question is whether AI knows your business well enough to recommend it.
